2011 Leadership School - "Engaged" and "Exceptional"

The Central Florida Political Leadership Institutewelcomed its 2011 class last Thursday afternoon for its annual political leadership school at the Roy E. Crummer Graduate School of Business on the campus of Rollins College in Winter Park. On hand to greet the 26 members of the 2011 class were BusinessForce President Mike Ketchum and BusinessForce Board of Directors Chair Jay Galbraith, Vice President, State and Industry Affairs at SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment.

Above Right: Nationally recognized direct mail expert, Jon Anderson, Founder and Creative Director, Mad Dog Mail walked the participants through techniques used for crafting direct mail campaign pieces based on the individual campaign's polling and strategy.

In the afternoon Institute session, Ketchum acquainted participants with "The BusinessForce Mission" and later presented five of the ten successful Central Florida Political Leadership Institute graduates who have been elected to public office in the region - Orange County School Board member Nancy Robbinson, Orange County Commissioner Jennifer Thompson, Winter Springs Mayor Charles Lacey, Lake County Commissioner Sean Parks and Winter Park City Councilwoman Sarah Sprinkel. Each offered their respective thoughts and insights on "The Central Florida Political Leadership Experience."

That evening the 201l class was officially welcomed at the traditional Opening Reception and Dinner attended by Central Florida Partnership leaders and BusinessForce Board members. Winter Park Mayor Ken Bradley, a 2008 Central Florida Political Leadership Institute graduate, and Central Florida Partnership President Jacob Stuart appeared to offer special welcoming messages to the 2011 class.

Throughout the day on Friday, several important topics critical to waging a successful political campaign - targeting voters, direct mail, polling as well as understanding power and influence were extensively explored by a faculty of nationally recognized experts assembled by Institute Director Christina Johnson. In addition, the 2011 class heard a timely and thoughtful luncheon address from Sen. David Simmons (R-Altamonte Springs) and concluded the day with a presentation by Jacob Stuart on "Critical Regional Issues and Resources."

During the final day on Saturday, Central Florida Political Leadership Institute attendees continued with sessions exposing them to social and earned media, opposition research, fundraising strategies, advertising and messaging, campaign ethics and issues-based grassroots campaigning.

The 2011 Central Florida Political Leadership Institute concluded with a graduation ceremony and reception for the 26 members of its 2011 class. At the graduation ceremony BusinessForce President Mike Ketchum praised the caliber of the 2011 program presented by Institute Director Christina Johnson and called the 2011 class "exceptional." He noted how "engaged and interactive" the 2011 class was throughout with the Institute faculty." He added, "With the wealth of information and encouragement they received at the Institute over their two and one-half days with us, this class is well positioned to continue with their process of carefully evaluating whether they may one day wish to serve our region in public office."
