ORLANDO, FL - Florida Citrus Sports (FCS) has extended an invitation to Syracuse to play in the 2004 Champs Sports Bowl, FCS Executive Director Tom Mickle announced Sunday.
Syracuse finished the regular season with a 6-5 mark, winning three of their last four games, including a season-ending 43-17 win over Boston College, to claim a share of the Big East Championship.
It will be Syracuse's first bowl appearance in Florida since a 31-10 loss to Florida in the 1999 Orange Bowl, and the Orange's first-ever appearance in an Orlando bowl. In all, Syracuse has compiled a 12-8-1 record in 21 previous post-season games, with wins in 10 of their last 12 bowls.
"Syracuse rallied late in the year to claim a share of the Big East title and certainly earned an invitation to our game," FCS Selection Committee Chairman Richard Jackson said. "With 21 previous bowl appearances, Syracuse is one of the premiere college football programs in the nation and we are thrilled that the Orange are coming to Orlando."
Syracuse will face another storied college football program in the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Tech accepted a bid to the Champs Sports Bowl last week. Syracuse and Georgia Tech have played only once, a 13-7 Yellow Jacket win in the 2001 Kickoff Classic.
The Champs Sports Bowl is scheduled to kick off at 7:45 p.m. (EST) on Dec. 21, 2004. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN, and tickets are available for $45. Fans can purchase tickets and find out more information about other bowl events by visiting www.fcsports.com.
