Frequently Asked Questions
What is required for entry into China?
U.S. Citizens need a valid passport and visa. You are responsible for these documents. However, for an additional fee the Chamber will work with our tour agency to handle your visa application process for you. (You will need to provide us with your passport, a signed and completed visa application form, two passport photos and $175.00)
What vaccinations do I need?
The Chinese government does not require Americans entering their country to get vaccinations, but you should check with your Physician or a Travelers Health Service before you go on the trip.
How do we get to China?
Your trip includes coach class round trip air on Air China, non-stop from JFK Airport in New York City.
Travelers are responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from JFK. The trip is approximately 12 hours from JFK to Beijing.
What is the weather like in China in October?
Think in terms of Beijing's weather being similar to New York City and Shanghai having a similar climate to the Carolinas.
What should I Wear?
Dress code is casual. Jeans are appropriate for the entire trip along with comfortable walking or tennis shoes (these are a must). Please leave your good jewelry and dressy clothes at home. Whatever makes you comfortable is what you should wear. It may be cool, so be sure to bring a jacket and a sweater. Dress in layers each day, so that you can adjust according to the weather.
What about hotels? Can I get a non-smoking room?
All accommodations are 4 and 5 star hotels in China. Hotel rooms are non-smoking unless you request a smoking room. Hotel accommodations are double occupancy and you may request either a king size or two queen size beds. Single occupancy rooms are an additional $450. All hotels will have hair dryers in the rooms and provide wireless connections. Most hotels have business centers as well. Electricity in China is 220 volts and you will need an adapter .
What is the schedule like?
This is a busy and extensive trip, so most mornings we will be up between 6 and 7 a.m., followed by breakfast in the hotel, and then on the buses no later than 8 or 9 a.m. You will return to your hotel each evening - usually after supper, but no later than 8 p.m.
What about meals and food in China?
The trip includes three full meals daily. Please know that breakfast is the only meal where you will have a choice of Western and Chinese quisine. Lunches and dinners will be in Chinese restaurants and most will be served family style with selections of rice, pork, shrimp, fish, chicken and assorted vegetables. Of course, there are McDonald's, Starbucks, KFC, etc. should you decide you need a snack or your preferred beverage in the evening.
Can I use Credit Cards in China? What about Cash?
All credit cards (except Discover) as well as Travelers Checks are acceptable in China. (Remember to call your credit card company before you leave and let them know you are traveling overseas.) Please leave checkbooks and check cards at home. There are ATMs in China but they will only give you money in yuan. (One Dollar U.S. = 6.8 yuan .) Since you may decide to purchase souvenirs or other items from vendors in markets and on the street, you will need cash for these purchases as well as any incidentals as we travel. You will also need approximately $25.00 per person as a tip that is collected from each traveler and will cover all our tour guides and bus drivers tips for the entire trip. (This tip is not included in your trip price and you must bring cash for this.) We recommend that you plan on bringing $300-400 dollars in cash.
Can I bring Children on the Trip?
We recommend that children be no younger than 10 years old, and accustomed to travel overseas.
